Patronage

Patronage: An Enduring Tradition

Collective philanthropy in 17th-century Holland. The void created by waning religious institutions proved fertile ground for a democratization of art patronage, led by a growing middle class of merchants, professionals, and skilled workers. The explosion of still lifes, portraits, and landscapes suddenly available to the broader public came to be known as The Dutch Golden Age.

Though largely unique to Holland, the movement found echoes in 19th-century Barcelona, where residents actively sustained artistic life through galleries, exhibitions, the civic commissioning of public murals. Continuing local support and appreciation of art weaves the fabric that distinguishes Barcelona as an international artistic hub.

Patronage, as a reciprocal relationship between benefactor and creator, can be transactional or philanthropic. The essayist Lewis Hyde observes that art exists in both the market and the gift economies, but only one is essential: “where there is no gift there is no art.” It requires careful attention, sustained effort, and physical engagement. It must be approached with fresh eyes and mind, practiced with discipline. It must constantly evolve and be pursued diligently in a continual process of discovery.

Only the timeless tradition of patronage can provide such conditions. Both patron and artist offer their gifts according to their capabilities, in their own ways sustaining our humanity.

As Beverly Sills famously said: “Art is the signature of civilizations.” It transcends information and expresses a culture’s experiences and interpretations of the world at a given historical moment. It immortalizes the ephemeral and endures across generations.

My mission is to enhance the urban environment and enrich the public through art. All meaningful change begins locally.

To date, my community has contributed some modest donations, but the approximate 20 murals I’ve painted have been funded personally. My work in the studio fuels this activity, allowing me to grow and improve while creating pieces that some may choose to own. The time and dedication required can continue only through support, whether transactional or philanthropic.

Hopefully, together, we can uphold this centuries-old tradition of patronage, ensuring that the tangible, visceral creations defining our humanity endure and remain accessible.

I regard myself as privileged above a thousand others in that you remove so many barriers in my way. It goes without saying that many often can’t carry on because of the expense; well, I can hardly put into words how thankful I am to be able to keep on working steadily. I have to try twice as hard to make up for lost time because I began later than others, and with the best will in the world I would have to give up if I didn’t have you.
